Three Phase Well Pump

Practical advice from H20 Works.

At H20 Installation & Maintenance of Well Pumps is one of our Specialties, it is important to make sure your replacement pump is matched according to the flow and pressure requirements of your irrigation and reticulation system, let the experts do the math and the hard yards and you just enjoy your green yard!

If the reticulation doesn’t work we follow a set of trouble-shooting steps to isolate the issue whether its something electrical like the reticulation / irrigation controller, pump starter, relay, solenoids, or something to do with the water supply. You will frequently be able to diagnose this on your own as the pump will be making a buzzing noise if its electrical pump fault or grinding if its an impeller / wet end fault, or if you usually hear a loud audible click sound when you activate the pump and now its just silent, will likely be the relay.

As seen in the pic above, you will generally find these “well pumps / centrifugal pumps / bore pumps / jet pumps” at the bottom of the pit under your bore lid. The lid will normally be a circular cone shaped tin lid or a circular flat concrete lid.

Once you’ve popped the lid the pump itself is usually fairly easy to identify, brightly coloured (yellow/red/blue are the norm), it will have some white PVC pipes going into and out of it. It will also be connected to a white electrical switch or hard wired junction point of some kind.

H20 will come out to have a look at the issues and do a free quote by request and then get the pump replaced within a few days!

Before we jump to any conclusions about the pump, it is important to identify all reasons that the bore water supply may be malfunctioning so we will go through the following steps (some of which you can also try if you are so inclined).

  • Pump has loss of prime -> Prime the Pump.
  • Pump safety switch tripped -> Reset & Test.
  • Check valve or foot valve worn out or trapped open -> Replace Check/Foot Valve
  • Electrical failure -> re-wire, replace RCD,
  • Pump sucking air on suction side -> Re-fit suction side plumbing.
  • Water table level dropped -> Re-drill bore hole.
  • Pump motor burnt out or seized -> Order a re-wind or replace pump.
  • Impeller worn out or broken -> Wet end re-build or replace pump.

The pump we came across in this case is a 3 phase bore pump in Cooloongup with a dead short in the windings (produced a noticeable buzzing noise and was not rotating), we had just serviced the wet end last season – so it already had a new impeller and seals, in discussion with the customer we decided to take it to Quality Rewinds in Rockingham and get the motor repaired.

We were able to pick the pump up the following day and get the retic back up and running in no time at all.
